Psalm 40: 'Glad News of Deliverance.'

•The theme of waiting, which is elaborated in Psalm 37, has been painfully explored in Psalms 38 and 39, but now it reaches a triumphant outcome. The rescue described in the opening lines calls for a fitting celebration. David realizes that no mere ritual will suffice; only an act of pure self-giving will be appropriate. He prepares to make this offering with a declaration that, as the New Testament reveals, can ultimately be fulfilled only by the Messiah. His statement, "Lo, I come," serves as the high point of the psalm.
