Psalms 88

Aug 19, 2025    Pastor Manning

This is an individual lament for someone overwhelmed by troubles, possibly feeling forsaken by God. The psalm does not specify these troubles but describes them as expressions of God’s wrath, making it suitable for various hardships. Unlike most laments, Psalm 88 does not end on a confident note, but it implicitly trusts that God, who brought these troubles, can also bring relief. The psalm urges persistent prayer, reminding singers to turn to God even when answerless, exemplified by Job's suffering. As part of the canonical Psalms, it affirms that faith can exist despite absence of hope, and can be prayed for others.
